Influence of COVID-19 on trust in routine immunization, health information sources and pandemic preparedness in 23 countries in 2023

dtap immunization for adults :: Article Creator Disease Known To Hospitalize Children Is Continuing To Spread In Michigan More than half of infants who contract pertussis, known as whooping cough, require hospitalization. Once their condition has deteriorated enough to require medical care, there isn't much physicians can do to treat them or speed up recovery. Instead, they offer supportive care, limit spread, and wait for the disease to run its course, said Dr. Francis Darr, a pediatrician in Marquette. "The key, again, is not so much treatment as it is prevention and avoiding infection in the first place," Darr said. Michigan is seeing its highest number of pertussis infections in a decade. As of Dec. 8, the state health department reported more than 1,500 cases, which is more than twice as much as the 596-case average from 2017 through 2019. Public health leaders are urging families to ensure they're up to da...

Chicken disease found almost a century ago could be key to controlling COVID-19 outbreaks, expert says - ABC News

Image
The poultry industry has a lot to teach the world about the future of coronavirus infection control, according to a University of Melbourne academic. Key points: The first coronavirus ever detected, infectious bronchitis virus, was found in chickens in the 1930s Infectious bronchitis virus is present in most countries and spreads between chickens very quickly, infecting entire bird flocks in as little as 24 hours Professor Hadjinoormohammadi says the mutating nature of IBV often requires new vaccines to protect the birds Professor Amir Hadjinoormohammadi works in avian medicine in the Asia Pacific Centre for Animal Health. He said infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) found in chickens had many similarities to COVID-19. "The learnings that we acquire from working with animal diseases can be applied to the way we control and diagnose diseases in humans," he said. Ketamine - Epilepsy Foundation

Image
Ketamine hydrochloride, a dissociative anesthetic, has proconvulsant and anticonvulsant properties. It should be used with caution in epilepsy patients. Of eight epilepsy patients who underwent dental work with ketamine, two had focal motor seizures and another had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. In some patients with epileptiform activity on their baseline EEGs, particularly those receiving 2–4 mg/kg intravenous doses, the activity progressed to electrical seizure.72 EEG recordings in all of these patients returned to their preanesthetic baseline within a week.73 If a clinical seizure occurs during ketamine use, further administration of ketamine to deepen anesthesia should be avoided. Instead, a CNS depressant, such as a barbiturate or benzodiazepine, should be used.3 In other studies, ketamine did not increase epileptiform or seizure activity in epilepsy subjects.74,75 Owing to the mixed depressant-stimulant effects of ketamine, epilepsy patients should be adequately premedi...

Nocturnal epileptic seizures and their oral complications - Dentistry IQ

Image
Figure 1: Bruising of the lateral border of the tongue due to a seizure Abstract Epilepsy is a neurological condition occurring in the brain. If a person has had two or more seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy. When a person experiences a seizure, the body will flex and extend, and the person may lose consciousness. A person may also inflict damage to the oral cavity. The person may bite the tongue, lips, and cheeks. Teeth may be fractured, periodontal ligaments damaged, and the temporomandibular joint traumatized. Nocturnal epileptic seizures occur during sleep and may be experienced unknowingly. Dental professionals can assist patients who are unknowingly experiencing nocturnal epileptic seizures, as well as patients who are experiencing the negative oral side effects of anticonvulsant medications. Seizures and epilepsy The brain sends messages to all parts of the body through electrical activity via nerve cells. (7) A seizure can occur when the brain receives abn...

Nearly 500 sick as FSA renews breaded chicken warning - Food Safety News

Image
Public health officials in the United Kingdom are continuing to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to raw breaded chicken. From January 2020, there have been 480 patients confirmed with salmonellosis caused by two strains of Salmonella Enteritidis and linked to consumption of frozen, raw, breaded chicken products. The first warning came in October 2020 when almost 400 people were sick, mainly in England but also in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Renewed warning The Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS), Public Health England (PHE), Public Health Scotland and Public Health Wales said people need to take care when storing, handling and cooking chicken items at home, such as nuggets, goujons, dippers, poppers and kievs. Inadequate cooking and cross-contamination in the kitchen during food preparation can lead to salmonellosis. For patients where information is available, a third have needed hospital treatment and four people have ...

Under proposed Utah law, state pet stores could only offer shelter dogs and cats - KSL.com

Image
SALT LAKE CITY — A bill introduced this week at the Utah Legislature would ban the sale of cats and dogs at pet stores throughout the state. HB420, sponsored by House Minority Leader Brian King, D-Salt Lake City, would make statewide a prohibition already enacted by several Utah cities, including Salt Lake. The bill is backed by the Utah Humane Society, and its advocacy director Rachel Heatley told KSL.com the law is necessary to end abusive and neglectful breeding practices in the state. "Dogs and cats in pet stores generally do not come from any sort of, what people call 'reputable breeders,' breeders of healthy dogs and cats," Heatley said. "Generally, these animals come from commercial puppy and kitten mills." Such "mills" can be large or small, Heatley said, but all have similar identifying markers. Many of them, for instance, keep their animals in small, stacked wire cages where waste can pass through the floors. And they don't provid...

Dental Procedures - Epilepsy Foundation

Image
Before a dental procedure, levels of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) should be measured and adjusted based on the individual patient's history. The dental team should be informed about the patient's seizure type and first aid. Seizure-precipitating factors, such as sleep deprivation or alcohol intake, should be avoided before the procedure. Methohexital was compared to local anesthetic in conservative dental procedures. Although a seizure occurred in only 1 out of 200 patients, the main disadvantage of its use over local anesthetic is side effects, including tongue movements, coughing, hiccoughs, and prolonged lethargy after the procedure.105 Seizures that occur during or after a dental procedure can occur with N2O104 and methohexital.51 In these studies, seizures most often occurred in patients with undiagnosed epilepsy or those who missed a dose of their antiepileptic medications on the day of the dental procedure. Other studies demonstrate that N2O and propofol in subanes...

Vaccinating Older Adults in the US Against COVID-19: A Work in Progress - Kaiser Family Foundation

Image
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, older adults have been at greater risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19. In December 2020, the FDA issued Emergency Use Authorizations for two COVID-19 vaccines. At the time, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) issued recommendations to give the highest priority to health care workers, and residents and staff in long-term care facilities. In mid-January 2021, the Trump Administration advised states to expand vaccine eligibility to people ages 65 and older – a population totaling more than 54 million, in addition to residents of long-term care facilities – in order to reach a broader population of high-risk individuals. This recommendation was reinforced by the Biden Administration. In response, many states changed their vaccination plans and started vaccinating adults 75 and older (consistent with ACIP recommendations), before expanding to include adults 65 and older. As of February 2...
