Kaiser Permanente Is Building A $25 Million Primary-care Facility In ...
Kaiser Permanente is spending $25 million to build the first two phases of a medical office complex at the corner of Harbor and MacArthur boulevards in Costa Mesa.
The building is set to span 48,000 square feet and mark Kaiser's 15th primary care site in Orange County. The health plan, a unit of Oakland-based Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, is OC's largest with more than 300,000 local members.
The first patients at the Costa Mesa facility are expected in September or October. Demographics are the key driver for the new complex, said Judy White, a Kaiser medical group administrator.
"We're growing very rapidly," said Kaiser Spokeswoman Judy White. "This will serve our members in Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach and Westminster."
Kaiser uses input from employers and housing developers, among other sources, in figuring out where to expand, White said.
"One of the key things we look at is our current membership and the market potential," she said.
Kaiser also sought a new building because it can't expand its longtime Huntington Beach office, according to White. Kaiser members who use that office can face a tough time getting appointments, she said. The planned Costa Mesa medical office building is nine miles away.
The health maintenance organization also plans to offer medical imaging services in Costa Mesa, including CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging, fluoroscopy and ultrasound.
"We only have one major imaging center in the county. This will be another convenience," White said.
Adult and pediatric primary care, obstetrics and gynecology and neurology are the other planned components of Kaiser's Costa Mesa center. The building is set to house a pharmacy and medical laboratory.
Kaiser, which employs its own physicians, plans to staff the new care center with 14 doctors and 45 other employees, including nurses and technicians. The health plan doesn't have a timetable for the complex's third phase, but Kaiser expects to employ 36 doctors and 150 other staff members in Costa Mesa when the center is built out, White said.
Other local Kaiser operations include a 200-bed hospital in Anaheim. The health plan also contracts for care with Irvine Regional Hospital Medical Center and West Anaheim Medical Center. N
