Vaccine Hesitancy and Administration of Influenza Vaccine to Children - AAP News

Image
In the midst of a pandemic with the fall and winter seasons upon us, the fear of a “twin-demic” involving increasing cases of both COVID-19 and influenza are of critical concern. Will there be enough resources to provide care for these two serious illnesses and will some patients actually get both at the same time? The reason to vaccinate against influenza while we await the availability of a safe and effective coronavirus vaccine has never been so important. Yet, there is a significant amount of vaccine hesitancy. How much is there? To answer that question, Santibanez et al (10.1542/peds.2020-007609) examined the 2018 and 2019 National Immunization Survey on Influenza (NIS-Flu), which included a 6-question survey on vaccine hesitancy. Their results are shared in detail in a study we are early releasing this month in our journal. Over 35,000 parents were surveyed to determine if they were vaccine hesitant, why that might be, and whether they had vaccinated their child over the past ye...

© iStock/FatCamera Valeria Fava, Isabella Mori, Mariano Votta, and Maira Cardillo of Cittadinanzattiva have curated the results of a civic survey on the supply of influenza vaccine doses across Italy. Some early vaccination campaigns began between 1 October and 15 October; and some of these will be extended until 31 January 2021. However, while there has been a percentage increase in the purchase of influenza vaccines up to three figures, there remains a serious lack of vaccines in pharmacies across Italy. Cittadinanzattiva’s civic survey was conducted to better understand this situation. It collected information from the following 10 Italian regions: Abruzzo, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Puglia, Sicilia, Toscana, Umbria, and Valle d’Aosta. Some of these regions have demonstrated a significant increase in available doses, such as Puglia (+320%), Lazio (+112%), Tuscany (+68%), and Sicily (+65%), while others show less marked increases, such as Campania and Emilia (+20...

Brunei MOH: No intention to use Korea's influenza vaccine; no Covid-19 cases for 10 days - The Star Online

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Nov 2 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The batch of Vaxigrip Tetra used in the Republic of Korea has not been distributed in any other country and therefore has never been imported into Brunei, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said yesterday. The MoH stated this in a release following reports of deaths in the Republic of Korea due to mass influenza immunisation. The MoH added while Brunei imports and uses Vaxigrip Tetra manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur France, which is one of the seven brands of influenza vaccines used in the Republic of Korea, the batch of Vaxigrip Tetra used in the Republic of Korea has never been in Brunei. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has investigated the matter and has reported no direct link between the deaths with the usage of the affected influenza vaccine brands. Most deaths involved people in their 70s and 80s. The autopsies showed that deaths were from other serious chronic health conditions like cardiovascular and cerebral ...

Influenza Vaccine: Even with Antigenic Drifts, There Is Still a Benefit - AAP News

Image
During the pandemic, it will be more important that everyone over 6 months of age get vaccinated against influenza so as not to use up limited medical resources on a preventable illness. Furthermore, influenza might potentiate the severity of COVID-19. Yet, many question the need for an annual vaccine. How effective is the flu vaccine? Campbell et al (10.1542/peds.2020-1368) studied this by looking at the effectiveness of the 2018-19 influenza vaccine that was targeted against three predicted strains of influenza A and B, but was not designed to target an antigenically drifted A (H3N2) strain that appeared to predominate in the second half of the flu season. The authors looked at 1792 hospitalized children at 7 hospitals between the ages of 6 months and 17 years and at 1944 children seen in their emergency departments during the 2018-2019 flu season. They obtained vaccine status from parental report in the ED, as well as state immunization registries or provider records for inpatients...

[WATCH] Seasonal influenza vaccine available for free in every town from October - MaltaToday

Image
Seasonal influenza vaccines will be administered for free in special centres that will be set up in every town, Health Minister Chris Fearne said. The government has procured 200,000 influenza vaccines with the first batch of 15,000 expected to arrive tomorrow, he added. Fearne was speaking in a recorded interview for TVM’s Xtra Sajf that will be broadcast this evening. The minister urged people to take the influenza vaccine this year as the health authorities try to stave off the impact of the seasonal flu at a time when the world is still grappling with COVID-19. The symptoms of seasonal flu are very similar to those of COVID, which may cause testing hubs to be overwhelmed. Apart from this, reducing the possibility of hospital admissions because of the influenza will lessen the burden on medical resources. Fearne said by 11 October, the influenza vaccine will start being administered for free to everyone who asks for it in specialised centres that will be set up in every town...

Influenza vaccine does not increase Covid-19 risk: Study - Hindustan Times

Image
Receiving the influenza vaccine does not increase a person’s risk for contracting Covid-19 or worsen associated conditions or mortality, according to a study. The research, published in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science, shows the flu vaccine is the single most important intervention to help stay healthy. Seasonal flu activity is unpredictable, and otherwise healthy people are hospitalised due to serious respiratory infection each year, the researchers said. It is even more important to receive the flu vaccination this year to help prevent a ‘twindemic’ of flu and Covid-19, they said. Researchers led by Joe Zein, a pulmonologist at Cleveland Clinic in the US, analysed over 13,000 patients tested for Covid-19 between early March and mid-April. They compared those who had received unadjuvanted influenza vaccines in the fall or winter of 2019 (4,138 patients) with those who did not receive the vaccine (9,082 patients). The study found that influenza vaccination was n...

Long-term care residents in that age group are to receive the high-dose vaccine for a third straight year. “It is always a good idea to receive the influenza vaccination but it is particularly important during the (COVID-19) pandemic,” Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, said in the release.

New Evidence on Relative Effectiveness of Adjuvanted Seasonal Influenza Vaccine in Seniors - Precision Vaccinations

Image
A worldwide leader in influenza prevention announced the publication of new real-world evidence (RWE) that demonstrated an MF59® adjuvanted, trivalent influenza vaccine (aTIV) was more effective than a standard-dose, non-adjuvanted trivalent seasonal vaccine in preventing influenza-related medical office visits and hospitalizations in seniors during the 2017-2018 influenza season in the USA. Adding MF59® adjuvant to an influenza vaccine is designed to enhance the immune response to the influenza strains contained in the vaccine in adults 65 years and older. The Seqirus study was published in Vaccines on August 7, 2020, assessed relative influenza vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of aTIV compared to non-adjuvanted seasonal influenza vaccines including high-dose trivalent vaccine, standard-dose quadrivalent vaccine, and standard-dose trivalent vaccine. The vaccines included in the economic burden analysis are the only influenza vaccines specifically indicated for patients 65 years and ol...
