Most infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in children and adolescents are asymptomatic. After exposure to a source case (a person with active tuberculosis), some people will become infected and others will not. Initially, the two groups cannot be distinguished. By 10 weeks after exposure, people who become infected will demonstrate a positive tuberculin skin test (TST) or a positive interferon gamma release assay (IGRA). USC researchers have developed a polio vaccine that doesn't require refrigeration, meaning it could someday be used all over the world to deliver the final blow to this longtime foe. The injectable vaccine, which was freeze-dried into a powder, kept at room temperature for four weeks and then rehydrated, offered full protection against the polio virus when tested in mice. "Stabilization is not rocket science, so most academics don't pay much attention to this field," said the study's first author, Woo-Jin Shin, a fellow in the lab of Jae Jung, chair of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. A hepatitis A vaccination clinic will be available Wednesday for those affected by the recent case at a local fast-food restaurant. The Jackson County Health Department will offer vaccinations from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the American Legion Annex, 400 W. Second St., Seymour. The vaccination is only available to those who consumed food and drinks purchased at the Taco Bell drive-through, 1509 E. Tipton St., on Nov. 13 and 14. Officials also have set up a hotline for those who have questions. Health department officials confirmed last week an employee at the restaurant worked at the drive-through on those dates while ill. Officials said Taco Bell is assisting and has been helpful during the process. Hospitals are required by law to report positive hepatitis A cases to local health departments. Health officials are working to combat the local spread of a statewide Hepatitis A outbreak. There are eight confirmed cases of the disease in Clark County and one case in Champaign County. Health Commissioner Charles Patterson with the Clark County Combined Health District said the uptick in cases is alarming. This particular strain of Hep A is especially dangerous. “Our previous confirmed case was clear back in 2011,” he said. “Maybe we’d see a 30 percent hospitalization rate. Now we’re seeing a 60 to 70 percent hospitalization rate.” Since the summer, the health district has been working with groups who are considered ‘at risk’ to limit the spread. For the health department, there are two ways to notify officials of a contagion: a lab report and a form.
