tdap vaccine around newborns :: Article Creator Whooping Cough Vaccine? Who Knew? If you've heard the telltale cough and seen an infant gasp for breath, it's easy to understand why a pertussis outbreak strikes fear in a parent's heart. Babies can wind up hospitalized or even die from the bacterial infection. That's why the recent surge in cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, should serve as a warning that we need to do more to instill confidence in and improve access to routine vaccination against the respiratory illness. Infants typically receive the vaccine in a three-dose series of Tdap shots between two and six months of age, then two more boosters by age 6. Adolescents and adults should get a Tdap booster every 10 years. Pregnant individuals should get a Tdap shot during every pregnancy. An estimated 35,435 cases of pertussis were reported in the U.S. In 2024 (through Dec. 28), according to the Centers for Disease Contro...

hpv vaccine :: Article Creator Doctor Says HPV Vaccine And Routine Screenings Aid Against Cervical Cancer The American Cancer Society estimates 13,360 people are diagnosed with and 4,320 people die from cervical cancer every year in the U.S.  Dr. John Wallbillich is a gynecologic oncologist and assistant professor at Wayne State University and Karmanos Cancer Institute. He says cervical cancer, which affects the cervix and other reproductive organs, is preventable and can be caught through regular screenings and the HPV vaccine. "At least 95 percent, in some cases it's thought to be 99 percent, of cases are caused by those cancer-causing strains of HPV," Wallbillich says. People 9–45 years old can get vaccinated against HPV.  Wallbillich says people often do not have symptoms of cervical cancer. That's why it's important for women in their 20s and up to get routine pap smears, under the guidance of their primary car...

common childhood immunizations :: Article Creator The Vaccine Schedule Is Under Fire. What's The Evidence For It? Before their immune systems mature, young children are especially vulnerable to infections — and to falling far more ill than adults might with certain common illnesses. That's why childhood vaccination programs have been such a boon for public health. In the past 30 years, recommended childhood vaccines have prevented an estimated 1.1 million deaths and 32 million hospitalizations in the United States. The recommended schedule for these vaccines is first set by an advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which reviews the recommendations and decides whether to adopt them. The committee's members — which include experts in vaccination, infectious disease, pediatrics and public health — meet several times each year to review the latest clinical trials as well as health and safety data from the genera...

new childhood vaccines :: Article Creator The $8 Billion Children's Vaccine Fund Kennedy Would Oversee When President Bill Clinton worked with a bipartisan Congress to enact a federal program to guarantee vaccines for poor children, they agreed that the authority over buying shots from drug makers should rest with the health secretary. The bill's drafters did not consider that an extremely vocal critic of childhood vaccines would emerge as a nominee for the role. That critic, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., comes before the Senate for confirmation hearings this week. If confirmed, he would have the power to limit or even cut off contracts with the makers of vaccines for more than half the nation's children under the $8 billion dollar Vaccines for Children program. The program has been credited with raising national vaccination rates and protects nearly 38 million low-income and working-class children from diseases like polio, measles, whooping coug...

To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily BioPharma Dive newsletter. Sales of both GSK's and Pfizer's vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus dropped significantly in the last three months of 2024, compared the same period one year before. In a earnings report Tuesday, Pfizer said sales of its vaccine Abrysvo fell 62% year over year in the fourth quarter. The company attributed the drop mainly to "a significant reduction in vaccination rates in the U.S." among older adults eligible for the shot after U.S. Guidelines were narrowed last summer. GSK reported a similar state of affairs Wednesday. Sales of its RSV vaccine Arexvy declined 69% year over year due to lower demand "related to a more limited recommendation ... For individuals ag...

tetanus vaccine name for adults :: Article Creator Toxoid Vaccine: Tetanus Step 1Use the growth medium to grow new copies of the Clostridium tetani bacteria.   With a toxoid vaccine, the goal is to condition the immune system to combat not an invading virus or bacteria but rather a toxin produced by that invading virus or bacteria. The tetanus shot is such a vaccine. Tetanus is a disease caused by toxins created by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. The vaccine conditions the body's immune system to eliminate these toxins. To produce the vaccine, you first need to grow many copies of the Clostridium tetani bacteria. Step 2Isolate the toxins with the purifier.   While in the growth medium, the bacterial cells produce the toxin, which are toxic molecules that are often released by the cells. To produce the vaccine, you'll need to separate these molecules from the bacteria and the growth medium. Step 3Add aluminum salts to the p...
