McLean County Health Department Offering Vaccine Clinics
BLOOMINGTON — The McLean County Health Department is offering several walk-in clinics for annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
Vaccine clinics are planned from 8:30 a.M. To 3:30 p.M. Oct. 11, Oct. 14 and Nov. 8 on the third floor of the health department, 200 W. Front St. In Bloomington, and from 9 a.M. To 3 p.M. Oct. 16 at the ARC (Activity & Recreation Center), 600 E. Willow St. In Normal.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends seasonal flu and COVID vaccines for those 6 months or older.
"Because the viruses that cause Flu and COVID-19 mutate quickly, getting the most updated vaccines helps protect you from newer strains expected to cause the worst infections this season," stated Geri Stuart, director of clinical health services at the health department. "After vaccination, it takes your body about 2 weeks to build antibodies, so getting your vaccines early in the season is a good idea."
Both locations will accept most health plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, and have self-pay options, according to a news release.
The health department provides free or reduced rates for all residents regardless of income through most health insurance plans and the Vaccines for Children Program, but the ARC does not accept that program or HMO health insurance.
The health department has a $30 self-pay option.
"Even healthy people can become very ill from a respiratory infection like Flu or COVID-19. Vaccination is a smart choice for those who want to reduce the risk of getting sick and missing out on work, school or other important events," stated Jessica McKnight, health department administrator. "More importantly, these immunizations have a proven track record of reducing risk of hospitalization or death for those most at risk, which includes children under age 5, seniors 65 and older, and those with compromised immune systems."
The health department recommends avoiding close contact with those who are sick, washing hand frequently and thoroughly or using hand sanitizer when washing is not available, covering sneezes and coughs, and staying home when sick.
Individual flu or COVID vaccine appointments can be made at the health department by calling 309-888-5455.
Visit vaccines.Gov to find pharmacies with vaccines available.
Last year was the first year the United States has vaccines available to protect the public against all three major respiratory viruses – the Flu, RSV and COVID-19.
