Regulations prohibit FDA employees from holding financial interests in any FDA "significantly regulated organization" and the FDA says it takes conflicts of interest seriously, but Peter Doshi, senior editor at The BMJ, finds that financial interests with the drug industry are common among its leaders. Doshi reports that nine of the FDA's past 10 commissioners went on to work for the drug industry or serve on the board of directors of a drug company. Meet Dr. Ashley Carter

Dr. Ashley Carter is a board-certified pediatrician who trained at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and completed her residency at the University of South Carolina / Palmetto Health. Being board-certified is important when seeking a provider because it means Dr. Carter voluntarily exceeded state licensing requirements for practicing medicine with an ongoing commitment to continuously expand her knowledge in a medical specialty, like pediatrics.

Dr. Carter is not only a Mom, but her background pursuing professional level ballet helps her understand the importance of optimal health and function of children. Prick her and you'll find out that she bleeds orange, too! When Dr. Carter's move from Lake Murray expanded SouthernMED to Clemson, she said: "I've been a Clemson fan ever since I was little and I bleed orange! It's just a good place. I spent my college years in Clemson and I'm really excited to get back up there. I think it will be a great area to practice in and a fun place to be. It's God's country!"

We got to know Dr. Carter with a few fun questions.

  • Favorite 90s jam: Whitney Houston
  • Favorite TV show: crime scene type shows
  • If you could be any Disney princess: Ariel (because she has the best songs)
  • 1st concert: Dave Matthews Band
  • Miss most about being a child: naps & playtime
  • Favorite junk food: sour gummy worms
  • Advice for parents: don't Google too much. No question is a bad question and I'm here to answer them all!

If you are pregnant and would like your child to become a patient of Dr. Carter's after birth, just let your OB or the hospital where you are delivering know that your child will be a SouthernMED patient. The hospital will notify SouthernMED once the baby is born.

What other parents are saying …

We came from Lexington, SC just to see Dr. Carter!!! She is simply amazing in every way. My little one looks forward to seeing her and that makes me so happy. The staff is very pleasant and makes us comfortable. No question goes unanswered. Can't wait for our annual checkup next year 😃

Takelia Robinson

Dr. Carter is a brilliant, compassionate pediatrician loved by all her patients. As the mom of a Clemson student, I am happy she is now serving that community. I appreciate the ease of scheduling and the same day appointment option for my son on a recent visit. The staff is very friendly, and there is always someone available to answer questions and offer family support if needed. This practice is a wonderful resource for pediatric care in Clemson.

Heather Yeh

Clemson has really gained an asset with Dr. Carter. We are fortunate that we are still able to see Dr. Carter in Clemson (after having seen her for many years in the midlands). She is an advocate for her patients and genuinely cares to provide parents with the knowledge and resources they need to be able to address their children's needs. We value her expertise in the care of our children. Like all SouthernMed Pediatric clinics that we've experienced, the office is well kept and staff are easy to work with.
