Influence of COVID-19 on trust in routine immunization, health information sources and pandemic preparedness in 23 countries in 2023

Image
dtap immunization for adults :: Article Creator Disease Known To Hospitalize Children Is Continuing To Spread In Michigan More than half of infants who contract pertussis, known as whooping cough, require hospitalization. Once their condition has deteriorated enough to require medical care, there isn't much physicians can do to treat them or speed up recovery. Instead, they offer supportive care, limit spread, and wait for the disease to run its course, said Dr. Francis Darr, a pediatrician in Marquette. "The key, again, is not so much treatment as it is prevention and avoiding infection in the first place," Darr said. Michigan is seeing its highest number of pertussis infections in a decade. As of Dec. 8, the state health department reported more than 1,500 cases, which is more than twice as much as the 596-case average from 2017 through 2019. Public health leaders are urging families to ensure they're up to da...

CDC Issues Guidance on Immunizations During Pandemic - AAFP News

Image
The COVID-19 pandemic has upended many aspects of family medicine practice. In some instances, telemedicine has replaced wellness checks, physical exams and other procedures that have historically been conducted face-to-face -- and the AAFP remains committed to ensuring members stay up to date on the latest developments in this area. For all of the potential associated with virtual visits, however, some patient care services simply can't be performed online. Administering routine immunizations is an essential aspect of care that requires FPs and patients to be in close physical contact. To help ensure that patients continue to receive needed vaccines while safeguarding clinicians and staff, the CDC has issued new interim guidance (www.cdc.gov) for immunization services during the pandemic. Among specific topics covered are considerations for routine vaccination, advice regarding vaccination of people with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, infection prevention practices, use...

Doctors advise getting an influenza vaccine this year, because COVID symptoms are similar - News8000.com - WKBT

Image
June 30, 2020 5:24 PM Isabella Hulsizer Posted: June 30, 2020 5:24 PM Updated: June 30, 2020 9:09 PM Every year influenza kills about 30,000 people in the U.S. That’s according to Gundersen Health System doctor Raj Naik who says it’s especially important to get the influenza vaccine this year. “People that will have symptoms that are indistinguishable from the Coronavirus it’s significant so it’ll make it just more complicated to sort out who has influenza and who has COVID,” said Naik. Niak said, it will most likely become regular protocol to test for each. “Of course we have testing for each, but it just taxes the system more. Secondly, that is if we had a big epidemic of influenza on top of what we’re dealing with, with coronavirus… it could really tax the resources that hospital systems have,” said Naik. Of the 10 people we talked to in downtown La Crosse, all say they plan to get the flu vaccine regardless of the pandemic. “I’ve always thought that vaccinations are rea...

Coronavirus Vaccine Update, June 29 | In the Pipeline - Science Magazine

More vaccine news to catch up on – previous updates and specific topic posts on this subject were on June 15 , on  June 11 , on May 26 , on May 18  (with  two other  posts ), on May 14 , on May 1 , on April 23 , and on April 15  (author’s note: yikes). Keep in mind that some of those posts were updated after their original publication data as well. Here’s the latest on the ones I’ve covered before and with new efforts added. There are now so many of these running that unless the program is especially noteworthy I’ll only touch on the ones that are in trials right now, or about to start soon. And I’m going to arrange them by vaccine class – the April 15 background post goes into some more detail on these, but I’ll start each group off with a short scientific summary. Neither the order in which these different mechanisms are presented nor the order in which companies are listed within them is meant to reflect any horserace handicapping on my part. Viral Vector...

Fauci doubts effectiveness of coronavirus vaccine in US due to anti-vaxxers - The Guardian

Image
The US is “unlikely” to achieve herd immunity to the coronavirus even with a vaccine, according to the country’s leading public health expert, who warned that a “general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling” is likely to thwart vaccination efforts. In an interview with CNN, Dr Anthony Fauci also said people not wearing masks was “a recipe for disaster” and said of the Trump administration’s attempts at contact tracing: “I don’t think we’re doing very well.” The US reported a record number of new coronavirus cases in a single day on Friday, with 36 states reporting a rise in infections and Texas, Florida and Arizona particularly badly hit. With more than 2.5m coronavirus cases and more than 125,000 deaths, the US accounts for about 25% of all coronavirus cases and deaths worldwide. Countries including the US are scrambling to develop a vaccine, and Fauci has said one could be available by the end of 2020 or early 2021. But he suggested the vaccine would not be fully ...

Child vaccinations dip slightly - Concord Monitor

Image
Twin State health care providers took steps this spring, even as they had to cut back on in-person medical appointments during the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure that children didn’t fall behind on their vaccinations for preventable diseases such as measles, whooping cough and polio. Though there have been signs of a slight dip in vaccinations delivered, providers say they have generally stayed on track. “So many things in our lives have been put on hold during this pandemic,” said Alice Ely, executive director of the Public Health Council of the Upper Valley, in an email. “Childhood immunizations should not be one of these things. We certainly don’t want to protect ourselves from COVID-19 only to find that many of our youngest children begin getting sick from preventable childhood diseases.” While that fear hasn’t been realized, at least not yet, doctors ordered fewer vaccines following the federal emergency declaration in mid-March. Nationally, there was a 2...

Balancing Act: Sanofi GC Karen Linehan Discusses Managing the Risks of Vaccine Development | Corporate Counsel - Law.com

Photo: Shutterstock.com As the quest for a COVID-19 vaccine intensifies, companies at the forefront of research need to grapple with complex legal issues at all stages of the work, from the science of creating a safe and effective vaccine to the logistics of distribution and the management of risk. Karen Linehan, executive vice president of legal affairs and general counsel of Sanofi, the France-based pharmaceutical giant, took time out recently to discuss how her team gets involved in her company’s efforts to bring a COVID-19 vaccine to market . Sanofi has a large presence and long track record in vaccines. What are the key issues in vaccine development and production that come immediately to your attention as general counsel? Product liability. No vaccine is ever 100% effective, which is one reason why serious efforts to develop them take place on many levels, involving many players. In the context of COVID-19, much of this work is taking place on an expedited basis—“pandemic spe...

WHO ACT-Accelerator prioritizes global vaccine approach - Regulatory Focus

The importance of a global approach to vaccine development and production, with a focus on collaboration, was a topic of a technical update and press briefing held 26 June by the World Health Organization (WHO).   The usual practices for drug development have been upended by the speed and scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, said officials. “I’m very hopeful and optimistic that this will be an unprecedented collaboration that also sets a model for the future,” said WHO Chief Scientific Officer Soumya Swaminathan, MD, speaking in an update on WHO’s collaborative Access to COVID Tools (ACT) Accelerator project. “Companies that are traditionally rivals are sharing” research protocols and other data and processes usually held as confidential commercial information, said Swaminathan.   In response to questioning from journalists, Swaminathan acknowledged that Astra Zeneca may have the “leading candidate” in the race to a vaccine. “The Moderna vaccine is not too far behind,” she sai...

School HPV vaccine policies could result in higher vaccination rates, reduction in cancers - UCLA Newsroom

Image
FINDINGS A UCLA-led study has found that in 2 of 3 states and jurisdictions with policies that require students entering school to receive the human papillomavirus vaccine, vaccination rates among 13-to-17-year-olds were significantly higher than in surrounding states without such policies. In Rhode Island, the vaccination rate among adolescents was 91%, compared with an average of 78% in neighboring non-policy states. In the District of Columbia, the rate was 89%, compared with 72% for nearby non-policy states. Virginia, which is in the same region as the district, was the one state with a vaccination policy that showed no difference from surrounding states. (68% vs. 72%). BACKGROUND Rhode Island, the District of Columbia and Virginia are the only states or jurisdictions in the nation with longstanding school-entry HPV vaccine policies. Virginia’s policy applies only to females; the others apply to all students. Many types of HPV are linked with potentially deadly cancers, inclu...

Common Childhood Vaccine Might Prevent Severe Complications Of COVID-19 - Eurasia Review

A paper published by Paul Fidel, Jr., PhD, Professor and Director of the Center of Excellence in Oral and Craniofacial Biology and Associate Dean for Research at LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry, and Mairi Noverr, PhD, Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, suggests that live attenuated vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) may prevent the severe lung inflammation and sepsis associated with COVID-19 infection. The paper was published online in  mBio  Increasing evidence demonstrates that live attenuated vaccines can activate nonspecific immune cells to train leukocytes (the white blood cells of the immune system) to mount a more effective defense against unrelated infections. The researchers demonstrated in a laboratory that vaccination with a live attenuated fungal strain generated trained innate protection against lethal sepsis (blood poisoning) caused by a combination of disease-causing fun...
