Influence of COVID-19 on trust in routine immunization, health information sources and pandemic preparedness in 23 countries in 2023

dtap immunization for adults :: Article Creator Disease Known To Hospitalize Children Is Continuing To Spread In Michigan More than half of infants who contract pertussis, known as whooping cough, require hospitalization. Once their condition has deteriorated enough to require medical care, there isn't much physicians can do to treat them or speed up recovery. Instead, they offer supportive care, limit spread, and wait for the disease to run its course, said Dr. Francis Darr, a pediatrician in Marquette. "The key, again, is not so much treatment as it is prevention and avoiding infection in the first place," Darr said. Michigan is seeing its highest number of pertussis infections in a decade. As of Dec. 8, the state health department reported more than 1,500 cases, which is more than twice as much as the 596-case average from 2017 through 2019. Public health leaders are urging families to ensure they're up to da...

HPV shot: Safety, efficacy, and who should get it - Medical News Today

Image
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can spread through sexual contact. While some HPV infections may resolve by themselves, others can persist and increase the risk of certain cancers. To reduce this risk, people can receive an HPV vaccine that helps protect against several strains of HPV. These include strains that can cause warts and strains that can cause cancer. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that a person can get after intimate skin-to-skin contact with another person. There are at least 20 different STIs borne by viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can transmit via sexual contact. Of these, HPV is the most common in the United States, and it causes more than 90% of anal and cervical cancers. In addition to routine testing and practicing safer sex methods, receiving the HPV shot can help reduce the risk of HPV infections that can result in genital warts and HPV-related cancers. In this article, we will discuss the safety and efficacy of...

Herpes zoster after COVID‐19 vaccination—Can the vaccine reactivate latent zoster virus? - Wiley

Image
I read an interesting letter by Boston et al published in February 2021, where the authors had reported herpes zoster in a 78 years-old man (with multiple comorbidities) 5 days after he had the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine. 1 This is the first report from India, on two healthy individuals who presented with herpes zoster infection within 1 week of obtaining the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, two vaccines are widely used in India to prevent the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease transmission. One is the ChAdOx1-nCOV vaccine 19 (Covishield ® ) and BBV-152 (Covaxin ® ). 2 ChAdOx1-nCOV 19 vaccine is a replication-deficient chimpanzee adenoviral vector containing the sequence for SARS-CoV-2 structural surface glycoprotein antigen. 2 It is one of the vaccines, which is authorized by the World Health Organization for emergency use. 2, 3 The common side-...

Leptospirosis can wreak havoc on pets, humans – Fort Carson Mountaineer - fortcarsonmountaineer.com

Image
By Capt. Mayleena Holm First Year Graduate Veterinary Program-Public Health Activity-Fort Carson What are the facts about leptospirosis? Leptospirosis, commonly referred to as lepto, is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium that leads to renal and hepatic injury and infection in animals and people. Not all animals with lepto show signs of infection but may still pass the infection to other animals or people. Common symptoms of the disease are vomiting, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin rash and jaundice. Lepto affects dogs, rodents, livestock and wildlife, as well as people, however, cats rarely develop lepto infections. There are many species of lepto bacteria with over 250 different varieties, called serovars. If a pet contracts lepto, will humans pass it to others like the flu? Lepto is zoonotic and can be passed from animals to people from bodily fluids. However, people do not spread it to other people via aerosol transmission like the flu. Lepto also liv...

It's Time For A Flu Shot. Here's What You Need To Know - NPR

Image
Enlarge this image Cristina Spanò for NPR With all the talk about COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, it's easy to forget that there's another respiratory virus poised to strike. Yes, it's that familiar winter nemesis, the flu. And there are vaccines to help ward it off — but also misinformation and fears circulating. "We've been concerned about vaccine fatigue and that people will be confused about whether or when they need the flu shot, and not very eager to once again roll up their sleeve," says Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation of Infectious Diseases. "Flu is a nasty virus and worth protecting against." "Two reasons make getting vaccinated against the flu the wise choice," he says. "First, it...

Nasal Flu Vaccine vs. Flu Shot: Why Choose the Nasal Flu Vaccine? - Prevention.com

Image
Cold and flu season has officially started in the U.S., so it's time to get your annual flu vaccine. Getting a shot in the arm isn't exactly fun, but there is another option: the nasal flu vaccine. Known as FluMist Quadrivalent or the live attenuated influenza vaccine, this flu vaccine lets you bypass the whole needle-in-arm scenario, making it a good option for children and people who are nervous about shots. But the nasal flu vaccine isn't for everyone, including adults over 50. Here's what you need to know before bypassing the shot. What is the nasal flu vaccine, exactly? The nasal flu vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, meaning it contains weakened flu viruses so they won't make you sick, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains. Those weakened viruses are specially designed to only multiply at the cooler temperatures found in your nose and not in your lungs or other areas in your body that are warmer. Just like the "regular" flu...

The Florida Department of Health now says the majority of cases of the recent deadly flu epidemic are originating from nursing homes and long-term care facilities, but schools and day cares are topping the list too. While doctors say the flu vaccine is not as effective this year, they say it will lessen the severity of symptoms if you do catch the flu. Flu stomps the nation, overwhelming ERs and leaving 20 children dead Flu cases increasing in most parts of Florida as season hits nation earlier than normal Doctors also say it's not too late to get the flu vaccine. ABC Action News is helping break down some of the free and low-cost options if you need to pay out of pocket for a flu shot. Abstract School-based health centers (SBHCs) are unique health care settings for our nation's school-aged children and adolescents. SBHCs represent the collaboration between the health and school communities to support the health and mental health needs and the academic achievements of children and adolescents, particularly students with health disparities or poor access to health care. SBHCs improve access to health care services for students by decreasing financial, geographic, age, and cultural barriers. This policy statement provides an overview of SBHCs, including the scope of services as well as some of the documented benefits and challenges.
