Lakewood Pediatric Dentistry Opens, Accepting New Patients

LAKEWOOD – A new dentistry specializing in the care of young teeth has come to town.

Lakewood Pediatric Dentistry, located at 133 E. Fairmount Ave., opened its doors last month and is accepting new patients.

The new business is headed by Dr. Jan Carlson, DDS, who recently relocated to the area with her husband, Andrew, a Lakewood native who attended Panama Central School. Upon her arrival, Carlson discovered a need for a pediatric dentistry that had previously gone unfulfilled. As a board-certified pediatric dentist, she seized the opportunity to not only fill that need in the community but also do so by opening her own practice.

"My husband and I had both been on active duty in the U.S. Air Force for a long time and it got to the point where it was going to be hard to be stationed together for the next four years. We have two small children and we didn't want to break up the family, so we decided to move to his home area," Carlson said. "I got lucky that the area wasn't saturated and there wasn't another provider, so I decided to open my own office. It's something that I've done for a long time and that I love. So I'm glad I could come here and fill that need for the community."

Despite the fact that Carlson and her family have only been living in the area since June, there were several, behind-the-scene steps that occurred as far back as a year ago, such as purchasing the building and getting her license to practice in New York.

Having officially opened its doors on Aug. 22, Lakewood Pediatric Dentistry is designed to treat patients ranging in age from infancy through adolescence, as well as patients with special needs. Carlson said the practice has been successful right out of the gate through walk-ins, online advertising and referrals from general practitioners in the area.

"From what we can tell we're really being received well, everyone has had good things to say about us," Carlson said. "The area does have a lot of general dentists, but sometimes kids need real, specialized care – whether it's behavioral management or treatment for baby teeth, and that's what we're designed to do. We want to be the comprehensive dentistry for all of that."

The dentistry is comprised of five treatment rooms, two of which are enclosed for specialized care. In catering to its younger clientele, it includes customized characteristics such as a waiting room, dubbed the "Kids' Zone," with tooth-shaped seats and iPads that include children's software. TVs equipped with wireless headsets have also been installed on the treatment room ceilings to distract children undergoing checkups and treatments. The dentistry does employ laughing gas and oral sedation, but does not utilize general anesthetic to put its patients under.

In addition to Carlson, the dentistry is staffed by three other employees: Lisa Marie Smrekar, who works the front office; Beverly Krywy, dental hygienist; and Kelley Faulkner, dental assistant.

Lakewood Pediatric Dentistry is open 8 a.M. To 5 p.M. Monday through Thursday. For more information, call 763-0130 or visit lakewoodpediatricdentistry.Com.

Fairview Hospital To Take Over Trauma, Inpatient Pediatric Care From ...

CLEVELAND - Fairview Hospital will soon take on inpatient pediatric and trauma care patients from Lakewood Hospital as the Cleveland Clinic regionalizes some of its many services on Cleveland's West Side.

"Lakewood and Fairview hospitals have long worked in overlapping markets less than four miles apart," said Jan Murphy, president and CEO of Fairview and Lakewood hospitals. "In December, 2009, we announced a unified leadership structure. We are continuing in this direction which will position us to provide the highest level of care in the right setting, to create better coordination of services and strengthen both hospital's long-term stability."

Murphy says that the Level II Trauma Center currently at Fairview Hospital will be able to accommodate patients from Lakewood Hospital that made up less than 1 percent of the hospital's emergency room visits last year.

Lakewood Hospital will also be sending pediatric patients requiring care for more than 23 hours to Fairview Hospital, which should not be a major increase for the Cleveland health center, Murphy says.

"Lakewood has 12 pediatric beds and they have been underutilized," she said at a community forum on March 31, adding that the hospital's census shows between one and two pediatric patients admitted on an average day. "We're taking better care of kids; we're keeping them out of the hospital."
