Internal Medicine Residency
Our internal medicine residency program is structured to provide a diverse clinical experience in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Our residents provide care at two unique hospital sites and two continuity clinic sites, all within five city blocks. Our inpatient training sites include University Hospital, a 1,100 bed tertiary care referral center for the Southeast and the Birmingham Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
Across all sites, you will experience clinical rotations in general medicine, medical and cardiology intensive care, and all the medical subspecialties. During your three years, you will learn to diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical illnesses, both common conditions and rare diseases that involve complex clinical reasoning. As you hone your clinical skills, our curricular structure provides progressive autonomy in a supportive environment, with sincere collegiality and abundant opportunities for scholarship.

The Saint Louis University Division of Nephrology offers comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic disorders of the kidney and urinary tract.
Our clinical services include inpatient and outpatient hemodialysis, critical care nephrology, continuous renal replacement therapies, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplantation, renal biopsy and imaging, interventional nephrology and advanced hypertension care. Since our inception, our goal has been focused on building a world class comprehensive training program.
Our program has been continuously accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for more than 25 years and we have graduated nearly 100 fellows.
Many of our fellows have gone on to successful careers, either in academic medicine or as clinical nephrologists. We offer robust inpatient and outpatient rotations, focused on all forms of renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, peritoneal dialysis and home therapies), renal transplantation, interventional nephrology, advanced hypertension diagnosis and management, and a wide range of general nephrology problems (glomerular disease, fluid and electrolyte disorders, acute and chronic kidney disease).
Acute Ischemic Stroke
Content
People who are having a stroke can exhibit a variety of symptoms, which can vary greatly depending on what parts of the brain are affected by the stroke. People suffering a stroke might experience speech difficulties, numbness, weakness of the arm, leg or face, paralysis, problems with vision, confusion, and even coma.
Stroke specialists have distilled this information into a helpful mnemonic to help remember the signs of someone having a stroke (Figure 2).
In an emergency, just think "FAST" and do the following:
Face - Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Is the smile uneven?
Arms - Ask the person to raise both arms. Can one arm not be raised upward or does one arm drift downward?
Speech - Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase like "The sky is blue." Is their reply slurred or does it sound strange?
Time - If you observe any of these symptoms, even if they go away, call 911 immediately. Check the time so that you'll know when the symptoms started.
If you notice any of these symptoms, even if they fluctuate or disappear, seek medical attention immediately and call 911!
