Downtown Pensacola Fire Causes Extensive Damage

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — Authorities are investigating after a fire in downtown Pensacola caused "extensive damage," News 5 has learned.

WKRG News 5's Alexa Daly reported on the scene of today's fire on North Palafox Street. Pensacola officials say the fire started in a building under renovation.

In a News 5 video, Pensacola firefighters can be seen spraying fire hoses from aerial ladders.

We're still gathering information about this incident, and it is unknown if anyone was injured in the fire.

Authorities said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Pensacola Online Bill Pay Still Down After Malware Issue

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Mayor D.C. Reeves confirmed Thursday that last week's network security threat was caused by a malware issue.

The mayor didn't reveal much about the pending investigation, but he did say for citizens, there are several features that are up and running.

The mayor says things like the phones and emails are back in operation. But citizens are still experiencing inconveniences because online bill pay is still not operational.

"These things just take time," Reeves said, "These investigations take time. It's not something that we're gonna have clear answers on tomorrow."

"Our phone system is up, 311 is up, our emails are up," he added.

But there are still some things that need to be restored.

"What you should really only be seeing on the citizen side of things, maybe the most common would be the bill pay continues to not be operational at this point for Pensacola Energy, sanitation," Reeves said.

It's an inconvenience for residents. But there is no timeline for when the online bill pay will get up and running again.

"If I could give you an answer and say it will be 'X' hours or 'X' days, of course we would absolutely do that," Reeves said. "But our goal is to make sure everything is restored properly. We're not rushing into something that might cause a set back to get even worse."

In the meantime, residents must pay their bills in person at city hall.

"Any late fees, any of those types of things that would normally take place, of course we are going to handle and make sure that we're doing right by the customer," Reeves said. "Those inconveniences are not their issue."

He says he sympathizes with citizens.

"We're doing everything that we can," Reeves said. "It is not for a lack of effort or a lack of manpower to be able to do that. But we just have to continue to follow our protocols and procedures."

The mayor says he anticipates he'll have more to share about the investigation as soon as next week.
