Travel Vaccine Recommendations for Infants and Children
//
The Grundy County Health Department is offering adult and children’s influenza vaccinations by appointment every week through flu season.
Fewer people get vaccinated against flu after the end of November, but flu activity most commonly peaks between December and February, and can last as late as May.
It’s not too late for anyone who is not yet vaccinated. The CDC recommends to everyone 6 months and older who has not been vaccinated yet this season that they get vaccinated now.
It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that provide protection against influenza virus infection.
Flu vaccine by appointment is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
This year, the health department has Fluzone High Dose quadrivalent flu vaccine for people 65 years of age and older.
This vaccine was made for senior citizens to give them better protection from the flu while covering four common strains of the flu virus.
The High Dose is covered by Medicare Part B with no cost to the senior. The cost without Medicare Part B or other insurance is $68.
The health department also is offering Flublok for adults younger than age 65 that covers four common strains of the flu and is egg-free so it can be given to adults who have an egg allergy. The cost for this vaccine also is $68 without insurance coverage.
The health department offers children’s influenza vaccines by appointment for children who are eligible for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program and children who are covered under Medicaid Title 21 CHIP vaccine program. Call your insurance help line or the front desk at the Grundy County Health Department to verify which program your child is eligible for. Privately insured children are urged to go to their primary care provider.
Those seeking flu shots are asked to bring their insurance card to the clinic on the day of the appointment.
