hep b vaccine for preterm infants :: Article Creator Key Federal Vaccine Panel Tables Vote On Delaying Newborn Hepatitis B Shot By Anil Oza Sept. 19, 2025 General Assignment Reporter A key government advisory committee voted Friday to postpone a vote on whether to delay infants' first hepatitis B vaccine — temporarily alleviating fears that a new recommendation on shot timing could reverse the significant progress made in controlling the disease's spread in recent decades. The decision followed a lengthy deliberation on Thursday by the newly reconstituted Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice, which pressed scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the necessity of the birth dose, and brought into question the veracity of the data presented on the risks and benefits of the vaccine. But ultimately, members voted to push the vote.  "I believe that there's enough ambiguity here and enou...

integrated care :: Article Creator Integrated Care Opens New Doors To Mental Health, Addiction Care In every American community — wealthy or poor, rural or urban, young or old — at least 1 in 5 people live with mental health disorders. And yet no American community has an adequate supply of mental health clinicians who can provide timely, affordable, high-quality care for the people who need it. Untreated mental illness has a profound toll: poor health outcomes, missed work, high costs of care, and premature death. Only half of individuals referred for treatment are actually seen by a mental health care provider and, when they are, the average number of visits is just two. Only half of psychiatrists accept insurance, and less than half of U.S. Counties have any psychiatrists at all. Why is there such a mismatch between supply and demand for mental health care? The main reason is that the U.S. Health care system has for years driven a wedge bet...

hepatitis vaccine for adults :: Article Creator Hepatitis B Vaccine Q&A: Why Do Babies Need The Shot? The people at highest risk for contracting hepatitis B include health care workers, IV drug users and people having sex. So why do babies get vaccinated for hepatitis B as soon as they are born? It's a fair question, and health care providers have compelling answers.  Hepatitis B is a virus that can do serious, sometimes fatal, liver damage. Although groups that are more exposed to swapping bodily fluids are at greater risk, anyone can get infected. Getting infected with hepatitis B as a baby is extra dangerous. Infected infants have a 90% chance of developing the disease's more dangerous chronic form. And a quarter of those babies will go on to die prematurely from the disease when they become adults, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.  When the vaccine was invented in the 1980s, doctors initially vaccinated only the...

childhood tb vaccine :: Article Creator Parents Navigate Mixed Messaging On Child Vaccine Recommendations Parents are navigating mixed messaging about childhood vaccinations from federal and state officials.  The impact of the mixed messaging is being seen inside doctors offices like pediatrician David Butler's office in Fort Myers, Florida.  First-time father Brandon Gonsalves, who is also a nurse practitioner, told Butler he's "not too sure yet" what his plans are for future vaccinations for his newborn. Gonsalves decided against vaccinating his baby for hepatitis B, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends be done at birth.  Last week, the panel that advises the CDC on vaccines delayed a vote that would have recommended moving the hepatitis B shot from birth to one month.  Hepatitis B, a liver infection, can cause long-term health problems such as liver disease, cirrhosis and cancer. The va...

nova primary care :: Article Creator Nova Scotia's Primary Care Waitlist Drops Below 100,000 The list of people looking for a primary care provider in Nova Scotia shrank, once again, last month. Nova Scotia Health removed 8,449 people from the Need a Family Practice Registry in February, bringing the total down to 95,875 — or about nine per cent of the population. The provincial government says it's aiming to get the number down to five per cent, or about 50,000 people. The latest numbers were issued Wednesday in a news release from the health authority. The release did not provide a breakdown of how many people have been attached to primary care providers in the past month, nor did it say how many were removed from the list through an ongoing validation process. Nova Scotia Health has been calling people on the list since last summer to find out if they still need a provider. The list — which some people look to as an indicator of how well th...
