Regulations prohibit FDA employees from holding financial interests in any FDA "significantly regulated organization" and the FDA says it takes conflicts of interest seriously, but Peter Doshi, senior editor at The BMJ, finds that financial interests with the drug industry are common among its leaders. Doshi reports that nine of the FDA's past 10 commissioners went on to work for the drug industry or serve on the board of directors of a drug company. That includes Margaret Hamburg, who led FDA between 2009 and 2015, but whose story is less well known. Like her colleagues, Margaret Hamburg h

Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department Offers TDAP Vaccines Post-flood

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — Due to demand, the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department will be offering TDAP (tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis) vaccinations starting Friday from at 9 a.M. To 3 p.M.

Vaccinations will continue Monday and Tuesday at the health department. All vaccinations are on a walk-in appointment.

As clean-up efforts are underway across the Ohio Valley following significant flooding, the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is reminding residents to check their immunization status to ensure they are protected against tetanus, in addition to protecting existing wounds from infection.

Vaccine is available to WV residents.

This vaccine is for individuals who have been exposed to flood waters.

Tetanus is a disease contracted by getting the tetanus bacteria into an open cut or wound. Although tetanus is rare, it can be very serious or even fatal.

Tetanus is preventable by making sure a person is up to date on their tetanus immunization. This is done by getting a tetanus booster every 10 years. Tetanus booster vaccine is now typically combined with diphtheria and pertussis vaccines known as "Tdap" to provide protection against all three diseases. Unless previously vaccinated with the same, Tdap is the recommended vaccine for persons 7 years of age and older. Td (tetanus and diphtheria) is recommended for booster doses for persons 7 years and older who have previously received a dose of Tdap. For persons with a wound that has been exposed to flood water, the recommended interval between doses of tetanus-containing vaccine should be shortened from 10 years to 5 years.

It is vitally important for medical providers to thoroughly screen persons when evaluating their need for tetanus-containing vaccine.

In addition to immunization, it is important to remember that open wounds and rashes exposed to flood waters can become infected. To protect yourself and your family:

Avoid exposure to flood waters if you have an open wound.

Cover open wounds with a waterproof bandage.

Keep open wounds as clean as possible by washing well with soap and clean water.

If a wound develops redness, swelling, or drainage, seek immediate medical attention.

CDC Warns Of Looming Tetanus Shot Shortages This Summer

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising doctors to conserve a certain type of tetanus shot in anticipation of shortages after one of its two manufacturers stopped production.

Two tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccine products have been available for use in the United States: one made by Sanofi, and one made by MassBiologics, which is the sole Td vaccine manufacturer in the country. According to the CDC, MassBiologics has discontinued production of its shot.

"Sanofi is taking steps to augment their available U.S. Supply," the CDC said, but it will take time and the agency said it anticipates "that the supply of Td vaccine in the U.S. Market will be constrained during 2024."

Grifols, which is the exclusive distributor for the MassBiologic shot, expects to have the product available only through about June, the agency said.

Temporary ordering controls are in place in the public and private sectors to help manage the gap in supply. The CDC said doctors should switch to giving the broader Tdap vaccine instead whenever possible. In addition to tetanus and diphtheria, the Tdap vaccine offers protection against pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

Tetanus shots are often given as a booster dose every 10 years, though doctors are recommended to give them earlier when treating severe or dirty wounds and burns. The Tdap vaccine is an acceptable alternative, the CDC said, including when a tetanus booster is indicated for wound management.

The use of Td vaccines has been declining in recent years, according to CDC data, though it is less expensive than the Tdap shot.

There are two licensed manufacturers of Tdap vaccines, and CDC said there are no supply constraints.
