It's part of a growing partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense. Officials from both agencies celebrated the Sabal Park clinic's grand opening during a ceremony on Monday. In the last year, the VA reported nearly 33,000 veterans in Florida signed up for health care. Many of them live in the Tampa Bay region, which has one of the largest veteran populations in the U.S. "It is always a challenge to have capacity meet that ever-growing demand, but it is our obligation to catch up to that demand as much as possible," Dr. Shereef Elnahal, VA Under Secretary for Health, said at the event. General Surgery Residency

Content

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine offers one of the most highly sought general surgery residency programs in the country. Our program offers ten categorical positions to first-year residents each year, of which four are designed as a five-year "Clinical Track", four as a seven-year "Research Track" that includes two years of dedicated research time, and one as a seven-year "Innovation Track". The program also offers a "Global Surgery Track" designed to allow a global surgery experience in post-graduate years three and seven.

Our general surgery residents are exposed to an extraordinarily broad range of clinical opportunities during their clinical rotations at a total of six major hospital affiliates.  Residents rotate at two public hospitals - Ben Taub Hospital and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and four private hospitals - Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Texas Children's Hospital, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado. Our general surgery residency program also provides basic surgical training to preliminary residents in the sub-specialties of neurosurgery, otolaryngology, urology, and plastic surgery.

Our program provides a well-rounded experience that includes training in the management of all areas of general surgery. These include abdomen, alimentary tract, breast, head and neck, vascular system, endocrine, trauma, and critical care. Our program also provides extensive exposure to pediatric surgery, endoscopy, cardiothoracic surgery, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, cardiothoracic and abdominal solid organ transplantation, and other of the surgical sub-specialties. We offer extensive clinical exposure to robotic procedures performed with highly experienced faculty in a broad spectrum of specialties, including bariatric, hepatobiliary, GI, cardiac and thoracic surgery. Notably, we offer our trainees extensive opportunities to train in our state of the art Simulation Lab equipped with a wide range of computerized simulation models and on robotic simulators positioned at our hospital affiliates

Graduates of our program complete their training as amongst the most experienced trainees in the nation. Fully prepared to be examined by the American Board of Surgery, our graduates consistently maintain a high success rate for board certification.

Division Of General Surgery

The Saint Louis University General Surgery Residency was founded in 1950 and has been an integral part of Saint Louis University ever since.

Our General Surgery Residency is an ACGME accredited, five-year program. We train five residents per year to become well-rounded, broadly trained general surgeons equally suited for fellowship training, academic surgery, or private practice environments.

Our goal is to create board-certified general surgeons who are compassionate, clinically excellent, technically adept, and prepared for the career of their choosing. A weekly didactic curriculum, supplementary journal clubs, clinical research opportunities, and a variety of activities outside the hospital allow for a balanced residency experience. Depth of experience is not sacrificed for breadth, as a high acuity patient population allows for mastery of all facets of general surgery training.

Here you will find information about our program including our training locations, clinical and operative experience, alumni, current residents, faculty, and our application process.

The breadth of experience ranges from academic tertiary care to private practice, and from care of veterans to children. This broad experience allows residents to experience a variety of practice styles and learn a broad array of technical skills. The clinical programs at each of the affiliated institutions emphasize general surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and cardiothoracic surgery across a broad variety of clinical settings.

    Overview

The U.S. Army/Baylor University General Surger/Intensivist Physician Assistant Residency and Doctoral Program was created as a benchmark for postgraduate education of Physician Assistants working in General Surgery/Intensivist.

The program combines subspecialty rotations, didactic instruction, and clinical research to produce a Physician Assistant that is capable of providing an advanced level of care at all levels of Surgical/Trauma/Trauma Critical care and covering multiple subspecialities within General Surgery.

The program is embedded as part of Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved general surgery residencies where the student receives training alongside second and third year general surgery surgical residents.

The graduates of this program encompass the expertise to autonomously manage non-operative general surgery/trauma care conditions and assist in surgical care and perioperative management of trauma and surgical conditions.

    Mission

The mission of the U.S. Army/Baylor University General Surgery/Intensivist Physician Assistant Residency and doctoral program is to provide a formal academic environment that facilitates a consistent and competent Physician Assistant capable of providing subspecialty care to address the growing requirements of the Military Health System (MHS). This formal education supports the practice of evidence-based medicine and clinical research that directly benefits the MHS and the allied health professions.

    Vision

The vision of the U.S. Army/Baylor University General Surgery/Intensivist Physician Assistant Residency and doctoral program is to set the benchmark for post-professional physician assistant education through the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in surgical and trauma care. Our graduates, as leaders in allied health, strive to advance surgical and trauma care through professional development, education and scientific inquiry.
