Officials from both agencies celebrated the Sabal Park clinic's grand opening during a ceremony on Monday. In the last year, the VA reported nearly 33,000 veterans in Florida signed up for health care. Many of them live in the Tampa Bay region, which has one of the largest veteran populations in the U.S. "It is always a challenge to have capacity meet that ever-growing demand, but it is our obligation to catch up to that demand as much as possible," Dr. Shereef Elnahal, VA Under Secretary for Health, said at the event. Newsweek has ranked Asan Medical Center's oncology, endocrinology, neurology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, cardiology, and cardiac surgery departments as the best in Korea.

The U.S. weekly news magazine rates each hospital through an online survey conducted by Statista, a German market surveyor and consumer data agency, on tens of thousands of medical professionals, including doctors and hospital managers. The 10 specialized treatments ranked by Newsweek included oncology, endocrinology, pulmonology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, gastroenterology 8, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and pediatrics.

AMC ranked fifth in the world for oncology and endocrinology, eighth in gastroenterology and neurology, 27th in pulmonology, 35th for cardiology, and 52nd for cardiac surgery.

Notably, AMC's Oncology Department rose two steps in ranking from seventh place last year. It became one of the top five hospitals regarding oncology care after MD Anderson Cancer Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Mayo Clinic Rochester.

"AMC performs an average of 20,000 cancer surgeries a year, which is the largest in Korea, and treats more than 900,000 cancer patients annually," the hospital said. "Also, the hospital has introduced an integrated cancer treatment system for the first time in Korea, conducting it more than 4,000 times a year."

The hospital added that its efforts to raise the level of cancer treatment by suggesting the optimal treatment direction to cancer patients have received recognition both here and abroad.

Other local hospitals in the oncology field ranked in the top 50 included Samsung Medical Center (12), Seoul St. Mary's Hospital (17), Seoul National University Hospital (21), Severance Hospital 30, and National Cancer Center (44).

Korean hospitals have also proved to show a strong presence in the orthopedic and pediatrics department.

The magazine picked Severance Hospital to provide the best orthopedic care in Korea, with the hospital ranked ninth among global hospitals.

Regarding pediatrics, Seoul National University Hospital was the only local hospital ranked in the top 50, with the magazine ranking the hospital 20th among global hospitals.
